The Walled Garden at Biltmore

Biltmore House and Gardens is one of the favorite places My Beautiful Bride and I visit several times a year. We rarely tour the house, but we almost always visit the Conservatory and the Walled Garden. Both are beautiful any time of the year, and we never tire of visiting there.

I created the image above by playing in Photoshop with a photo of the Walled Garden taken several years ago. I tried to create an image that looked similar to a charcoal sketch or some other type of drawing while being at least somewhat realistic.

Experimenting at the Beach

I’ve read quite a bit about HDR (high dynamic range) photography, but I had never actually tried to get an HDR image until our vacation at the beach last week.  Wednesday, May 18, was cloudy and overcast when we got up.  So I took three photos (one normal, one underexposed and one overexposed) of the scene from our balcony and combined them into a single HDR image.

I think it turned out pretty good for my first attempt.  What do you think?

When Betsy and I were at Ocean Isle Beach in January, we saw many beautiful sunrises.  I played around with one of my photos trying to emphasize the colors while minimizing the details.  I rather like the result of my experimenting and am sharing that with you today.

This painting is based on a photo I took a couple of years ago in the Conservatory on a January visit to Biltmore House and Gardens in Asheville, North Carolina.  I just liked the color and shape of this foliage.

Betsy and I had planned to go to Cashiers, North Carolina, over Valentine Day, but 14 inches of snow in the mountains on western North Carolina caused us to postpone that trip.  We finally made it to Cashiers in mid-March.  We had hoped to see Whitewater Falls on March 19, but thick fog prevented us from making that visit.  Fortunately the weather cooperated on March 20, when I took the photo on which this poster is based.

One of the nicest ways to spend a cold winter day is to visit the Conservatory at Biltmore Estate and Gardens in Asheville, North Carolina.  The Orchid Room is toasty warm and the orchids are absolutely gorgeous.  This water color is based on a photo taken back in February, 2011.

This drawing of a Starfish plant is based on a photo taken last year in the Conservatory of the Biltmore House and Gardens in Asheville, North Carolina.  We visit the Conservatory each time we visit Biltmore, and this time we spent some time enjoying the different succulents being grown.

We can’t visit Biltmore House and Gardens in Asheville, North Carolina, without spending time in the Conservatory.  One of our favorite rooms in the Conservatory is the Orchid Room.  The wide variety of orchids is always amazing, and the colors and detail are beautiful.  We always come away with many photos.

The picture on which this drawing was based is shown below.

A couple of years ago Betsy and I drove the Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville, North Carolina, to Skyline Drive in Virginia.  Along the way we stopped at Linville Falls to break up the trip and stretch our legs.  While there, we hiked to Upper Linville Falls, where we enjoyed this scene.

The picture on which this drawing was based is shown below.

Betsy and I always go to the gardens when we visit Biltmore Estate and Gardens, but we have another favorite spot that we almost always visit.  It’s possible to get a great view of the back of Biltmore House from the Lagoon near the French Broad River.

The picture on which this drawing was based was taken in October. 2011, and is shown below.
