Betsy and I enjoy going to the Smoky Mountains or the Blue Ridge Parkway to enjoy autumn colors.  But we’re fortunate that we can also find some beautiful autumn color in our own front yard.

(Now if I could only get those leaves to fall somewhere other than our yard!)

The picture on which this drawing was based is shown below.

My daughter Kelly and her husband Chuck took Betsy and me to the Peach Festival near their home in the Buffalo, New York, area during a visit in September, 2011.  This midway ride was very popular, but I decided I would keep my feet firmly on the ground and fulfill the duties of photographer.

The Italian Garden at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, is a garden near the house that has three symmetrical pools as its main features.  While visiting the garden, I got a photograph of a dragonfly checking out some of the water plants.

The Hensley Settlement in Cumberland Gap National Park is a historic homestead community on top of Brush Mountain.  While walking through the community Betsy and I saw this homemade gate across a path leading to a pasture.

Cades Cove is one of our favorite parts of the Smokies.  We try to get there a couple of times each year, especially when the cove is a little less crowded.  I got this view of the Methodist Church in Cades Cove from Rich Mountain.

Sempervivum (hens and chickens) are fascinating plants.  They are succulents and we like them because they are pretty and easy to care for.  The ‘hens’ flower just before they die.  The flowers are small and delicate as well as beautiful.

Few things in summer are prettier than white, fluffy clouds in a beautiful blue sky.  This drawing is based on a photo I found in my archives.  The photo was taken at our house in August, 2010.

Last year Betsy and I established a new bed of day lilies.  All of the day lilies in this new bed are re-bloomers, so we will be able to enjoy these blossoms again in the autumn.

Palace Purple is one of the new day lilies in this bed.  The color of this blossom perfectly fits its name.

Betsy and I talk about going to the beach, but we go for the seafood as much as for the sand sea.  This year we went to Calabash, North Carolina, each evening for dinner.  Calabash, the ‘Seafood Capital of the World’, is a fishing village where you can watch the boats come in and, if you desire, buy fish and shrimp right off the boat.

When we visit Mt. Nebo State Park in the Spring, sunsets are special because we can sit on the back porch of ‘our’ cabin and enjoy the view.  This drawing is based on a photo taken on our visit last year.
