My first impression on my very first visit to Hong Kong was that of a very large, urban area teeming with people.  But it didn’t take me long to discover that there were several different aspects of Hong Kong, some of which were very surprising.

I did not expect to find the scene above — it almost appeared to be a view from some tropical island.  The photo was actually taken at Repulse Bay in Hong Kong.  This image is made from a slide taken in 1987; I used Photoshop to clean the image and remove some of the damage.

Experimenting at the Beach

I’ve read quite a bit about HDR (high dynamic range) photography, but I had never actually tried to get an HDR image until our vacation at the beach last week.  Wednesday, May 18, was cloudy and overcast when we got up.  So I took three photos (one normal, one underexposed and one overexposed) of the scene from our balcony and combined them into a single HDR image.

I think it turned out pretty good for my first attempt.  What do you think?

The View from a Bali Beach

Looking seaward from Kuta Beach

(Note:  All pictures may be enlarged by clicking on them once or twice.)

Several days ago I was looking through some images I had scanned from 30-year-old slides and found an image taken on Bali looking out to sea from the beach.

Unfortunately the image showed the age of the slide more than I liked, so I played around in Photoshop adding a texture and using a soft light blending mode.  This is the result, and I must admit that I rather like it.

By the way, the white line along the center of the image is caused by waves crashing into the reef forming the lagoon.

When Betsy and I were at Ocean Isle Beach in January, we saw many beautiful sunrises.  I played around with one of my photos trying to emphasize the colors while minimizing the details.  I rather like the result of my experimenting and am sharing that with you today.

Cloudy Day at the Beach

Although Betsy and I had a wonderful time at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, last month, I must admit that the weather left something to be desired.  It was cloudy and dreary when we arrived, but we still enjoyed the sight and sound of the ocean below our room.  In the late afternoon of that first day I captured the sun trying to break through the clouds.  When I got this photo on my computer, I played around with it to emphasize the sunbeams coming down.  The picture above is different, but I rather like it.

The original photo is shown below.

Calabash Waterfront

When Betsy and I visit the beach, we always also visit Calabash, North Carolina.  Calabash calls itself ‘The Seafood Capital of the World’, and the we can testify that the seafood is definitely delicious.  Calabash is primarily a fishing village, and shrimp boats dock daily during the season.

The Calabash waterfront is beautiful in its own right, as the painting above shows.

Ocean Isle Beach

We had perfect weather when we were at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, earlier this month.  There weren’t many people on the beach while we were there, and the beach and the sky seemed to go on forever.  This water color is based on a photo taken during one of our walks along the beach.

Dunes at Ocean Isle Beach

Sand, sea and sky are often the main attractions of a visit to the beach, but the dunes and the grasses on them can be beautiful as well.  This drawing shows the view from the dunes at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.

Betsy and I spent a week at one of our very favorite places — Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.  The weather was nearly perfect, and we practically had the beach to ourselves part of the time.  The painting above shows the wide beach we enjoyed while we were there.
