Experimenting at the Beach

I’ve read quite a bit about HDR (high dynamic range) photography, but I had never actually tried to get an HDR image until our vacation at the beach last week.  Wednesday, May 18, was cloudy and overcast when we got up.  So I took three photos (one normal, one underexposed and one overexposed) of the scene from our balcony and combined them into a single HDR image.

I think it turned out pretty good for my first attempt.  What do you think?

We have a pink dogwood tree in our front yard, which we feel is pretty special because most of the dogwoods on our street are white.  There is something about the simplicity of the dogwood blossoms that I find to be very appealing.

In late April Betsy and I were still getting out on the golf course before the sun popped over the mountains to the east.  The morning of April 25 was overcast with heavy clouds, and I snapped this photo of the sky.

Although I thought the original picture was pretty good, I played around with the image in Photoshop and darkened the clouds and the foreground to  emphasize the color of the approaching dawn.

The original version of this photo is shown below.
