In late June Betsy and I traveled to North Carolina to meet my son Robert and his family.  We took the opportunity to visit the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is a favorite drive of ours.  We stopped at the Tanbark Ridge Overlook north of Asheville, North Carolina, where I got this panoramic view of the sky and those beautiful mountains.

We’re fortunate to live on the Cumberland Plateau.  Our summers are reasonably moderate, so our roses continue to bloom very nicely even through the hottest months of summer.  This is Lemon Spice rose, which has a nice fragrance to go with its soft colors.

Sempervivum (hens and chickens) are fascinating plants.  They are succulents and we like them because they are pretty and easy to care for.  The ‘hens’ flower just before they die.  The flowers are small and delicate as well as beautiful.

Few things in summer are prettier than white, fluffy clouds in a beautiful blue sky.  This drawing is based on a photo I found in my archives.  The photo was taken at our house in August, 2010.

How to decide which rose to grow in our garden?  Betsy and I try to have the best of both worlds:  beautiful color and pleasing fragrance.  I think Perfume Delight scores on both counts, and the name fits as well.
