Western & Atlantic Railroad Tunnel

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.  Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

Last month Betsy’s son, Jeff, and I visited the historic Western & Atlantic Railroad Tunnel in Tunnel Hill, Georgia.  This tunnel, 1,447 feel long, was constructed between 1848 and 1850 as part of the first railroad across the Appalachian Mountains.  If you ignore the modern safety lights, I think this sepia photo does a pretty good job of conveying the age of this constructed-by-hand tunnel.
