Touching Lily

July 31, 2012

In addition to our roses, we’ve been blessed with many beautiful lilies this year.  The lilies in front of our house have been especially spectacular.  This beauty, Touching, supplied us with many blossoms and a wonderful fragrance.

Looking Through the Willows

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.  Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

When Betsy and I were dating, and even after we were married, we used to meet in Nashville’s Centennial Park during my lunch hour.  During those times we often walked around Watauga Lake in the park.  When we went back to Centennial to celebrate our anniversary, we once again walked around the lake.

The painting above shows the lake through the branches of a weeping willow tree on the bank of the lake.  The picture on which this painting was based is shown below.

Wildfire Rose

July 24, 2012

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.  Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

The bright red-orange color is responsible for the name of this rose, Wildfire.  And while the wildfires out West have been devastating and things to deplore, I think the Wildfire in our yard is simply beautiful.

A great way to spend a summer afternoon is to drive the back roads on the Cumberland Plateau here in Tennessee.  This drawing is based on a photo taken not too far from Fairfield Glade during a Sunday afternoon drive.

Spellbinder Day Lily

Although we really like our roses, we also have some beautiful day lilies in various places in our yard.  These bright, cheery blossoms, Spellbinder, are near the deck on the side of our house.

This painting is based on a photo taken in June.

Wildflower on the Trail

July 12, 2012

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.  Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

While hiking in the Harmon Den Wildlife Management Area in western North Carolina, Betsy and I came upon a lonely wildflower by the side of the trail.  This pastel is based on a photograph taken at that time.

Blue Mesa at Petrified Forest National Park

Betsy and I took our first western trip last year.  Although we saw some wonderful places, we barely scratched the surface of things to see in that beautiful part of the country, so we hope to get back there soon.

One of the first places we visited was Petrified Forest National Park, where we hiked along Blue Mesa.  This is the view fairly near the trailhead.

The picture on which this drawing was based is shown below.

Fourth of July Fireworks

July 5, 2012

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.  Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

The Fourth of July means fireworks for many Americans, and we have a Fourth of July fireworks display each year here in the Glade.  It is very well attended by residents and visitors alike.  This painting is based on a photo from my archives of the fireworks a couple of years ago.

Pink Perfection Lily

July 3, 2012

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.  Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

We have some Pink Perfection lilies in a flower bed in front of our house.  Each of the plants is now at least six feet tall, and one plant is eight feet tall.  The best thing about them, though, is that each plant is covered with beautiful huge blossoms with a delightful fragrance.

The picture on which this drawing was based is shown below.

Pink Promise Rose

July 2, 2012

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.  Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

Any rose with the color and form of Pink Promise is going to be beautiful at any time.  But when the rose is sprinkled with raindrops, it becomes even more beautiful.

The picture on which this painting was based was taken June 1, 2012.
