Hell’s Fire Iris

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.  Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

The name “Hell’s Fire” is a little unsettling, but I’m guessing the name refers to the deep burgundy color of this iris.  Hell’s Fire was the first iris to bloom for us this year, and one of the nice things about it is that will bloom again in early Autumn.

The photo on which this painting is based is shown below and was taken in early April of this year.

It’s an interesting iris. Probably Hell’s fire because it’s red and has those scorched, singed by fire looking edges. I wonder which two other colors produced this kind of offspring. It doesn’t have the bright, happy colors of spring but rather the deep, darks of autumn. Great photo George!
